“Thirteen years ago, when I started running, I never imagined I'd get this far. Personal commitment would not have been enough without the support of my family and of those who, for a few meters or for tens of kilometers, for a few hours or for years, trained me like Giuseppe Stara and accompanied and supported in this extraordinary life experience . Many thanks to all".

These are the words of Carmine Corriga, at the end of the New York marathon , a race to make everyone understand that sport, and running in particular, are a great antidote to the disease. Corriga, 60, driver of Arst, enrolled in Atletica Bauladu , the country where he lives, has won yet another challenge.

"After five months of training, I took part in the marathon par excellence - says Carmine - probably the best known and most exciting. 42 km and 195 meters through the five major districts of the city: from Staten Island to Central Park, through Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Manhattan. For me it was a dream come true. "

Corriga's history is truly unique. Until 2010 he had never done any physical activity. Suddenly he discovers he is diabetic and here is the turning point in his life. Start running as "medicine" and sport becomes an integral part of the day. Workouts on training, competitions on competitions, supported by the excellent advice of Dr. Gianfranco Madau , an athlete himself and then at the service of diabetes and metabolic diseases of the Assl of Oristano.

Not least those of Marcello Grussu national president of Aniad, the national association of diabetic athletes, which works to support people with diabetes. For Carmine Corriga it was a continuous crescendo of increasingly demanding races up to the participation in about ten half marathons and the marathons of Verona 2015, Florence 2016, Valencia 2017, Rome 2017, 2018, 2019.
