American First Lady Melania Trump raised "the thorny issue of children in Ukraine and Russia" in a letter to Vladimir Putin, which her husband, the president, reportedly personally delivered to the tsar during their meeting in Anchorage : Reuters reported this on its website, citing "two White House officials".

Officials, however, did not disclose the contents of the letter, Reuters writes, noting that Melania was not present in Alaska.

The Ukrainian website Ukrinform highlights the indiscretion and openly speaks of «Ukrainian children abducted by Russians» as the content of the letter , recalling that since the beginning of the large-scale invasion, on February 24, 2022, an estimated 19,500 Ukrainian children have been deported to Russia , although the number could be «significantly higher».

As of July, it is reported, 1,485 of them had been returned by the Russians, and 1.6 million Ukrainian children are still living under Russian occupation in Ukraine. Ukrinform also notes that on March 17, 2023, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued international arrest warrants for Vladimir Putin and his Commissioner for Children, Maria Lvova-Belova, for war crimes and illegal deportation of the population, including children.
