Salvatore Vespertino , a fugitive originally from Nuoro and one of the two anarchists definitively sentenced to 8 years in prison for wounding the police bomb disposal expert Mario Vece , who was hit on New Year's Eve 2017 by the explosion of an explosive device placed in front of the "Il Bargello" bookshop in Florence, a commercial activity believed to be close to Casapound, was arrested in Spain, in the capital Madrid, by the Spanish national police. The bomb disposal expert lost a hand and an eye in the explosion.
Vespertino had been a fugitive since July 2023 : the Digos of Florence was engaged in his search. The other convicted, Pierloreto Fallanca, had instead been arrested by the police in Bologna on July 16, the day after the Supreme Court ruling that had confirmed the convictions of the two.
For the search for Vespertino, 38 years old, an investigative group was formed, the police explains, «since the first days of his fugitive status, made up of personnel from the Central Directorate of Prevention Police and the Digos of Florence who, on behalf of the Florentine Prosecutor's Office, started complex investigations and deployed a specific device for his search, focusing on the group of associates and the already known ties he had abroad (Spain, France, Switzerland, Greece); for this reason the police forces of these countries were all involved with various requests for international cooperation constantly renewed in this year and a half of his fugitive status, effectively allowing us to reach» his capture.
Vespertino, it is also explained, is the recipient of the execution order issued by the Attorney General in July 2023 "for the expiation of a total residual sentence equal to 5 years, 6 months and 1 day of imprisonment (with subtraction of the period suffered in execution of the precautionary custody) for the crimes of illegal possession of weapons, very serious personal injury and damage, extended internationally ".
The 38-year-old was "identified as responsible for the attack thanks to a trace of DNA left on the device and detected by the forensic police".
