Joe Biden is now open to peace negotiations on Ukraine and even to the possibility of " talking to Vladimir Putin ".

The American president said it on the sidelines of a meeting at the White House with Macron. The two leaders set themselves the goal of putting an end to the Ukrainian conflict, to which end the international peace conference on December 13 in Paris will be fundamental.

The US and France will continue to support Ukraine "as long as it is necessary", they reiterated in a joint statement, pledging to provide Kiev with " political, security, humanitarian and economic aid as long as it is necessary ".

But behind the "strong condemnation" of Moscow's "illegal" aggression, its "war crimes" and "irresponsible nuclear rhetoric" we can glimpse a change of pace in American strategy after more than nine months of war.

The opening to negotiations - which is "still possible" for the US president - with the start of an international conference is clear, but Biden has done even more, saying he is " willing to talk to Putin if he shows signs of wanting to end the his war ". Among the signals requested by the tenant of the White House, the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine .

Macron is one of the few Western leaders who, while condemning the invasion, has always preached dialogue with Putin, with whom he has always maintained an open channel. But Paris, the French president specified, " will never put pressure on Kiev for a compromise unacceptable for Ukraine ".
