Republicans in the US House formally launch an impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden, suspected of complicity in his son Hunter's opaque foreign affairs .

Speaker Kevin McCarthy made the announcement, elected after a record series of votes only thanks to the decisive support of a handful of Trumpian deputies.

«Through our investigations - he explained - we discovered that Biden lied to the American people about his knowledge of his family's foreign businessmen. Eyewitnesses said the president joined multiple phone calls and had multiple interactions, dinners that netted his son and his business partners millions of dollars,” he added, evoking a “culture of corruption.” Bank documents, according to the speaker, show that nearly $20 million in payments were routed to Biden family members and associates “through various shell companies.”

“Despite the serious accusations, it appears that the president's family was offered special treatment by the Biden administration itself that they would not otherwise have received,” he accused, referring to his son Hunter's plea agreement - which later collapsed - for prison escape crimes. tax and illegal possession of a handgun.

«These are allegations of abuse of power, obstruction and corruption and deserve further investigation by the House», concluded McCarthy, assuring that «we will go where the evidence leads us» and warning that «the American people deserve to know that the charges public are not for sale."

"Political extremism in its worst form", the White House immediately reacted, via a post on X by spokesperson Ian Sams. “House Republicans investigated the president for nine months and found no evidence of wrongdoing,” he added.

So far, no evidence has emerged that Biden had a role, direct or indirect, in his son's controversial affairs, although it is undeniable that Hunter exploited the brand of the name, as he himself confessed in his autobiography. But in the meantime, the Trumpists need it to keep Biden under pressure and damage his image - already weak - in the election campaign . McCarthy may have given in on impeachment also in the hope of uniting the party to avoid a shutdown at the end of the month with a budget agreement, which includes the request for another 21 billion dollars for Ukraine.
