While the fears of the Democrats increase after the embarrassing performance in the TV duel with Donald Trump, Joe Biden tries to justify himself for what happened on June 27th.

“I wasn't intelligent,” said the US president. « I decided to travel around the world a couple of times just before the debate for I don't know how many time zones, I think at least 15. And then I almost fell asleep on stage. I didn't listen to my staff."

During a fundraiser in Virginia, Biden apologized for his poor performance in the debate: "It's not an excuse, but an explanation," he clarified.

Statements that come as controversy mounts within the Dem house over his health conditions and his ability to remain the candidate for the White House .

"Horrified" by the performance, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse openly asked the White House for "guarantees on the president's condition" , asking if "this is a real anomaly and not just the way he feels these days". Peter Welch of Vermont harshly rebuked the Biden campaign for being "dismissive of anyone who raises issues for discussion." And Lloyd Dogget, a progressive parliamentarian and veteran of the Dems, has openly called for Biden to withdraw .

A withdrawal that many are calling for privately, hoping that his wife Jill will convince the president - who is very reluctant - to take a step back.
