A Russian investigative journalist from the independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta has been hospitalized after being beaten in Chechnya.

An expert on Chechnya, Milashina was attacked after she traveled to the Russian Caucasus republic to cover the trial of Zarema Musayeva , mother of social activist Yangulbayevs, who was kidnapped from her Nizhny Novgorod apartment by Chechen law enforcement in January 2022 and taken with strength in Chechnya .

Milashina was traveling to the Chechen capital Grozny from the local airport with lawyer Alexander Nemov when she was attacked by several masked men . First her head was shaved and covered in green paint, then her fingers were broken with batons and kicks. At the hospital, she was diagnosed with a head injury. Lawyer Alexander Nemov was stabbed in the leg. All equipment has been destroyed.

«Hands tied, kneeling, gun pointed at the head – she said – A classic kidnapping, as it was once done. They hadn't seen each other for a long time. They immobilized the taxi driver and threw him out of the car, got into the car, put their heads in it, tied my hands, put me on my knees, put the gun to my head. They did everything nervously and so they weren't able to tie my hands."
