A car ploughed into a group of people in the center of the German city of Leipzig, killing at least two people and injuring around twenty , two of them seriously, Bild reports.
The driver of the car, Mayor Burkhard Jung explained, has been arrested and there is no longer any danger.
Approximately ten ambulances are at the scene of the accident, and shops in the pedestrian zone are closed. The circumstances of the incident are still unclear, but according to local broadcaster Radio Leipzig, reported online by Reuters, a damaged Volkswagen SUV with a person on top was seen speeding through a pedestrian zone in the city. The broadcaster cited eyewitnesses who described several bodies covered in sheets and that a stabbing had also occurred.
At the time of his arrest, the driver showed signs of "mental instability," Bild reports. At high speed, he turned into the pedestrian zone of Augustusplatz and continued for about 500 meters to the market square.
The reasons for the gesture are currently unknown.
