Breaking news in the case of Maddie McCann, the three-year-old English girl who vanished into thin air in the Algarve, Portugal, in 2007, while on holiday with her parents.

Laurentiu Codin, the cellmate of Christian, the 47-year-old German citizen and main suspect in the disappearance of the little girl , revealed that in prison the man confided in him that he had kidnapped the child during an attempted robbery.

Codin reported the story of Brückner – who is on trial for sexual assault and rape and has already been convicted of the same crimes in the past – to judges at a court in Braunschweig, Lower Saxony,

The revelations quickly made headlines in the UK media, which particularly highlighted the question the suspect allegedly asked his cellmate: "Can a child's DNA be taken from bones underground?"

Codin told investigators a story that bore striking similarities to the night Maddie disappeared, including an attempted robbery by Brückner “in a region where there are hotels and rich people live,” a detail reminiscent of the resort where the McCanns were vacationing.

"He said he didn't find any money, but he did take a little girl. He also said that two hours later there were police and dogs everywhere, so he left, out of the area," the inmate added.

Brückner, arrested in Milan in 2020, has never been formally charged with the girl's disappearance, but what has emerged only increases suspicions about him.
