The wreck of the " Principe Umberto ", a majestic transport ship torpedoed on June 8, 1916, was found off the coast of Cape Ling , in the Albanian waters of the Otranto canal. An immense tragedy, the most serious in the Italian naval history of always, costing the lives of 1926 victims.

Soldiers of the 55th Regiment of the Royal Army traveled aboard the “Prince Eugene”. The steamship, 145 meters long, 7,929 tonnes, capable of carrying 1,300 passengers, was part of a class of three units called "Regale", which also included the names of Queen Elena and King Vittorio.

The ship was torpedoed by an Austro-Hungarian submarine, while traveling in the Otranto channel.
