The Senate approved the first reading of the Calderoli bill on differentiated autonomy. 110 votes in favour, 64 against and 30 abstentions.

The measure now passes to the House for consideration.

The bill concerns the differentiated autonomies of the Regions with ordinary statute and defines the procedures for the application of article 116 of the Constitution so as to obtain an agreement between the State and the Regions that request differentiated autonomy.

There are numerous subjects that the Regions could see transferred and range from health to education, from the environment to transport, from the management of regional state property to transport and land reclamation.

Satisfaction was expressed by the leader of the League, Matteo Salvini: «A great result», he said, just as the green light aroused satisfaction in the Minister for Regional Affairs Roberto Calderoli: «A further step forward towards a historic result that has been awaited for too long time".

The secretary of the Democratic Party has an opposite opinion: «It is truly inexplicable – were the words of Elly Schlein – that Meloni decided to give in to this horrendous exchange for his political purposes, jeopardizing national unity».
