In the world conference held starting at 16:30, Italian time, NASA showed the other incredible images that were taken by the new James Webb space telescope.
If the first deep-field image shown tonight by US President Joe Biden was astonishing, today, equally spectacular new images were unveiled. First, the Webb Telescope observed the planet WASP-96b , determining the composition of its atmosphere, finding the presence of water in this hot gas giant, half the size of Jupiter. Looking 2,000 light-years away at the Planetary Southern Ring Nebula, the remnant of a star like the Sun, at its center the presence of a double star system was revealed for the first time.
We know the Universe has hundreds of billions of galaxies, and Webb's "eye" has rested on a famous group of galaxies , the "Stephan Quintet" . Glittering clusters of millions of young stars, gases ejected by newly exploded young stars are visible in this shot made unique by a vast sea of thousands of distant background galaxies.
The most shocking image is that of the Carina Nebula , one of the largest nebulae visible from Earth. About 7600 light years away, the detail of the gas cloud where new stars are forming is astounding.
Jets of gas from young stars, which appear as red dots in darker regions, clearly emerge in this image and show the remarkable capabilities of the James Webb Space Telescope which has just begun to probe the Universe.
