The 2025 winter irrigation season begins, scheduled from November 1st to March 31st 2025, with water availability reduced to 70% compared to the standards of previous years. The announcement was made by the Land Reclamation Consortium of Southern Sardinia, with the decision taken following the difficulties in terms of drought on the Island.

"We are happy to be able to start the winter season, an opportunity that until a few weeks ago seemed uncertain", says Efisio Perra, president of the Consortium. " Thanks to the incessant commitment of farmers to save water and the continuous collaboration with our Consortium, we have managed to guarantee a water availability of 70% , thanks also to the use of water from the Tirso system connected to the Flumendosa. This collective effort has allowed us to safeguard the agricultural year, even if we must continue to be cautious in the use of the resource".

The winter season is safe, but the spring season will still have to be evaluated: "At the moment there are no conditions to open it," warns Perra. "We are waiting for indications from the Basin Authority. It is essential that farmers plan their crops with caution, since the availability of water remains uncertain. In previous years, we were able to start the spring season, but this year is different."

In this difficult context, the president sends a message to the institutions: « Currently, between 200 and 250 million cubic meters of water are missing to guarantee the functionality of the water system. It is essential, indeed fundamental, that the institutions identify alternative sources of supply before it is too late and commit to developing long-term strategies to address this incessant structural gap. Only in this way will we be able to guarantee a sustainable and lasting future for agriculture in our region ». With an appeal from the Consortium: « Water is a precious resource, its responsible management is essential to guarantee a sustainable future for Sardinian agriculture » .
