The Sassari Provincial Industrial Consortium and the Municipality of Porto Torres have reached an agreement to jointly regulate the procedures for addressing the issue of waste and vehicle abandonment along consortium roads in the industrial area. The resulting environmental health consequences have forced the stakeholders to approve the agreement, signed by John Frank Fois, Director of the Environment Department, acting on behalf of Mayor Massimo Mulas, and by the Consortium, represented by President Simona Fois. The agreement, to address this critical issue, includes an operational protocol for the management of illegally abandoned vehicles and waste.
In recent years, the exponential increase in illegal landfills and the abandonment of vehicles on the sides of roads crossing industrial areas has brought to the attention of authorities the issues surrounding the quantity and nature of waste released in urban, industrial, and rural environments. Landfill areas, if not immediately cleaned or remediated, become commonplace dumping sites, resulting in piles of garbage that lead to environmental degradation and a potential risk of pollution. This results in aesthetic damage to businesses and residents, landscape degradation, negative impacts on the quality of life, and a significant commitment of public resources to remediate the area.
Costs are determined not only by cleaning operations but also by waste collection and separation, in addition to the costs of transportation and disposal at waste disposal facilities. The agreement between CIPSS and the Municipality will enable the implementation of a strategy aimed at saving available financial resources and improving urban sanitation services on the consortium's streets.
