Virologists from all over the world in the chair at the science park of Pula for the Scientific school "Innovative Approaches for Identification of Antiviral Agents", organized by the Department of Life and Environmental Sciences of the University of Cagliari and by Sardegna Ricerche: most important European training event for PhD and early-post doc students in the sector.

Among the speakers, who will alternate from 26 to 30 September, the names of Priscilla Yang of Stanford University (USA), Kathie Seley-Radtke, president of the International Scientific Society Isar (International Society for Antiviral Research), Johan Neyts and Graciela Andrei stand out. , of the Rega Institute of the Catholic University of Louvain, Vincenzo Summa of the Federico II of Naples and Enzo Tramontano of the University of Cagliari.

The event - which will be attended by 34 students from Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom and the United States - also involved important biotech companies such as Reithera, Takisbiotech, Dompé, ViroStatics in the training activities.

The Scientific school is the first step in the "Next generation virology", a strategic project initiated by Sardegna Ricerche and Università, which have signed a program agreement to transform the laboratories of the Pula park into a reference point for the most avant-garde research on antivirals.

The objective is innovative research in the field of virology and the development of antiviral drugs , the strengthening of the laboratories of the Biomed Platform of the park and the organization of training courses, scientific workshops and dissemination events.

"Sardegna Ricerche will be able to strengthen its laboratories also thanks to the upcoming 28 recruitments authorized by the Region for Pula and Alghero. An important result for research and for the territories where our facilities are based", remarked Maria Assunta Serra, general manager of Sardegna Ricerche.

“The pandemic we are struggling to get out of has shown the importance of being prepared for the challenges that can arise from viral infections. We need to be ready to prevent what we have experienced in recent years from happening again. The University of Cagliari, involved in numerous scientific research projects in these fields, is an Italian and European reference point in this area ”, recalled Enzo Tramontano, director of the Department of Life and Environmental Sciences.
