New, alarming data on ill-treatment in Sardinia, in third place among the Italian regions for the number of women victims of violence who turn to hospital services.

The dramatic report comes from Istat , which compared emergency room access following cases of gender-based violence in the period preceding Covid (2017-2019) with respect to the pandemic period 2020-2021.

In detail, in the triages of the island, the admissions of women victims of violence increased from 19.8 for every 10,000 visits to hospital to 26.4, against a national average which rose from 14.8 to 18.2.

The other regions with a similar level of abused women who resort to hospital care are registered in Abruzzo (27.6 women victims of violence per 10,000 inhabitants) and in Liguria (27.2).

But in Sardinia there is also a significant increase in emergency room visits following episodes of violence involving men, which rose from 23.5 to 38.4 per 10,000.

At the national level, Istat underlines, «in 2021, there were 11,771 women who accessed the emergency room with an indication of violence, for a total of 12,780 accesses (men are 10,246 for 10,844 total accesses). The incidence of such accesses is equal to 18.4 per 10,000 total accesses to the emergency room in men are 15.1), in constant increase since 2017 (14.1), despite the general decrease in the use of emergency rooms as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic".

The Institute also underlines that " the access rates of foreign women to the ED with indications of violence are more than double those of Italian women : 11.8 per 10,000 residents against 4.7 in the pre-pandemic period 2017-2019; 10.0 against 3.8 in the 2020-2021 pandemic period. The greatest gap is observed in the 18-34 and 35-49 age groups where the rates are higher».
