The trains are new and with the last batch in June the average age of the fleet – what the experts call rolling stock – has dropped significantly , carriages and seats are comfortable and there is even space on board for bicycles. But the travel times between one city and another, on this Island where the transport system seems to have remained unchanged for a few decades, have not changed at all .

In fact: in some cases the situation has worsened . It takes at least 3 hours to travel from Cagliari to Sassari on the hybrid Blues, which however here in Sardinia can only run for most of the journey with the old diesel engine due to the lack of an electrified network. And depending on the number of stops and the time of departure, you have to take into account almost an hour more.

The new Trenitalia timetables came into force a few days ago. However, there is little positive news : «The fastest train takes 14 minutes more than in 2015», observes Michele Vacca, representative of the Utp association (public transport users), «in other cases it takes much longer, even though the trains are all new and the railway line has improved compared to the past».
