Fifteen precautionary measures were notified by the Gip of the Court of Cagliari to as many suspects, accused of having set up a thriving illicit traffic of special and dangerous waste between Gallura and southern Sardinia. The investigation is coordinated by the District Anti-Mafia and Anti-Terrorism Directorate and carried out by the Carabinieri Ecological Operational Unit of Sassari, assisted by the Noe of Cagliari and by the provincial commands of the two capitals.

Among the suspects, eleven of Bosnian origin residing in Olbia and Telti, and four Italians, legal representatives or managers of companies in the metal waste treatment and recovery sector with legal or operational headquarters in the province of Cagliari. House arrest was triggered for three of them and residence bans for twelve.

The investigations started in March 2021, when the Noe of Sassari identified an unauthorized storage site for metal waste near Olbia, in the Colcò area, which was managed by a family of Bosnian origin residing in the city.

According to military findings, every day trucks owned by companies in the metal waste treatment and recovery sector took large quantities of waste from illegal landfills to transport them to their plants in southern Sardinia.

They collected hazardous waste (exhausted lead batteries, refrigeration equipment) and non-hazardous waste (ferrous metals, WEEE) from very low-cost manufacturing companies: they then stored the material and resold it to other companies. A turnover that would have handled over 1,300 tons of waste and generated illicit earnings of around 1 million and 400 thousand euros.
