They unloaded the residue of the palm oil cargo into the sea off the Oristano coast, about 5 cubic meters drained during the disconnection of the hoses.

The commander and the first officer of a chemical tanker bound for the port of Oristano flying the flag of the Marshall Islands are therefore investigated for malicious marine pollution.

Inspected by the military of the Port Authority, the ship was subjected to administrative detention for "serious irregularities relating to the safety of navigation and human life at sea" which must be eliminated before resuming navigation.

"Palm oil - says the Port Authority of Oristano coordinated by the Head of the Maritime Compartment, Captain of Frigate Matteo Gragnani - is a liquid substance classified as harmful by the international Marpol convention, as well as polluting and dangerous by the Ibc code (international code for the bulk transport of dangerous chemicals) ".

The spill into the sea of palm oil was identified by the European Maritime Safety Agency (Emsa) through the Clea Sea Net System (based on the acquisition of images transmitted by satellites).
