After the disruptions experienced earlier this week, plastic waste collection in Cagliari has returned to normal . The emergency has been resolved for now, the Municipality emphasized in a statement, noting that the situation affects the entire country.

"The plastic packaging recycling sector is facing a structural crisis ," the statement reads, due to "high treatment costs" and "competition from plastic products from non-EU countries," which have led to "a saturation of national plants."

A blockade that had heavy repercussions on the island and in the capital , "preventing the regional plants from receiving the materials collected in the municipality of Cagliari" .

And while industry consortia are calling for urgent action, the Ministry of the Environment has set up a technical committee, and the regional department itself has been involved in finding solutions.

Yesterday, Wednesday, November 19, a recycling plant reopened, allowing the emergency to be immediately resolved . But the difficulties, the Municipality emphasizes, "have not been completely overcome." And until a nationwide solution is found, "further delays in plastic collection cannot be ruled out."

"Any inconveniences," the note reads, "will be communicated promptly."

A very fragile balance, with Sardinia more exposed than other regions, as Environment Councilor Rosanna Laconi explains: "Transport costs are higher and alternatives are few. A blockade here would have immediate and much more serious effects."
