The first sit-in protest was organized by the CGIL (Italian General Confederation of Labour) in front of the Tergu waste sorting and recycling plant. The union thus launched a bitter dispute regarding, among other issues, the dismissal of a CGIL member, a worker representative at the plant.
Two complaints were also filed, one to the Carabinieri of the NOE and one to the labor inspectors of Spresal, regarding the working conditions of the center's staff. During the sit-in, the territorial secretary of the CGIL Civil Service, Paolo Dettori, announced that he would challenge the dismissal of the union representative.
The workers showed up at the company entrance with a specific goal: to protest what they consider an act of persecution.
Secretary Paolo Dettori said: "The next step, pending the outcome of our complaints, will be a meeting. The CGIL is supporting a member who has asked the employer for clarification on safety devices and waste management procedures."
The Tergu plant serves numerous towns in Gallura and Sassari and is operated by two companies. According to reports, the dispute began when the CGIL (Italian General Confederation of Labour) began demanding clarifications on the toner handling methods and the protective equipment provided to workers.
