An initial check carried out in recent days on the weight of the 59 eggs laid in the first Caretta caretta turtle nest, found in La Pelosa on 3 September, has highlighted a possible failure of the embryos to develop.
The outcome did not surprise the experts of the Cnr of Oristano, where the eggs are currently located, since it was a late nesting, probably the third seasonal nesting of the turtle, the percentage of success of the hatching was very low . The nest laid on the beach of Stintino was subsequently moved on September 4, or the following day, to the edge of the beach. However, the particularly intense adverse weather conditions caused the submergence of the nesting chamber.
According to the regional network protocol, also following the suggestions of the ministerial guidelines, the scientific referent of the regional nesting deemed it necessary to move the 59 eggs in the incubator to the CNR laboratories in Oristano on September 13. The eggs, free of mold and parasites, were thus kept at an average temperature of 29°C and a humidity of over 90 percent.
The complete analysis of the stage of development reached by all the embryos, still monitored in the incubator, will be carried out in the next few days by the CNR staff of Oristano, once the maximum time for hatching in nature has expired.
