"Anyone who hasn't felt that chill that takes your breath away can't understand." Violence, assault, and self-defense are the central themes of the post by Dario Giagoni, a member of the Lega Nord's Gallura region, which sparked a heated debate on social media, garnering support and over two thousand comments.

"Those who are attacked have only seconds to decide; those who judge have years to reflect. Defense occurs in an instant, in the darkness of a corridor, on a street near the station, or in the reflection of a shadow," Giagoni writes.

The focus is entirely on the moment of the attack and the whirlwind of emotions that, according to the MP, are unleashed in those moments: "In those moments, you're not a lawyer, you're not a judge. You're just a human being trying to return whole to your children."

Hence the clarification: "It's not ideology, it's primal instinct. Asking a victim to be 'proportionate' while their heart is beating fast is like asking a drowning person to measure the temperature of the water. We need a justice system that protects those who suffer, not one that puts them on trial for being afraid."

A speech that relaunches the theme of self-defense and, Giagoni concludes, calls for "fewer slogans and more common sense."
