During the last few weeks, the Nas of Cagliari , between the provinces of Cagliari and Oristano , has checked about fifty wholesalers and ethnic food stores, finding 15 non-compliances with respect to the provisions on the subject; the foreseen administrative sanctions were therefore raised for a total of approximately 14,000 euros and the foodstuffs lacking the traceability requirement or irregular in terms of custody and conservation were seized.

The value of the food seized is approximately 4,000 euros .

But on a national level, in one year the Nas seized over 8 thousand tons of irregular foods including fish, dairy, bakery and cereal products, meat, soft drinks and beverages. Goods characterized by unknown origin, preserved in poor hygienic-sanitary conditions or stored in unsuitable environments, and still with evident signs of alteration, with expiry dates exceeded. All for a total value of over 34 million euros.

The budget was provided on the occasion of the " World Food Safety Day " which was celebrated yesterday. The initiative was established in 2019 by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and CODEX Alimentarius and the Ministry of Health - Directorate-General for Hygiene and Food Safety and Nutrition (DGISAN).

Overall, around 27,000 inspections were carried out across the entire agri-food chain (production, distribution and catering), and irregularities were found in over 10,000 structures (37%).

During the checks , 16,118 violations of national and community regulations governing food hygiene and safety were ascertained ; 3 operators in the food sector (2 veterinarians in charge of meat and dairy supply chain controls for corruption and abuse of office, a dairy farm owner for theft of electricity) were arrested, 9,328 subjects were reported to the competent authorities (of which 772 reported), high administrative fines of over 126 million euros.

798 structures (warehouses, restaurants, bakeries, various food production and sales activities, etc. for a total value of over 500 million euros) were closed due to serious hygienic-sanitary and authorization irregularities.
