Heavy sentence this afternoon in the Court of Cagliari at the trial for the beating that took place in Poetto in June 2023. Shortly after 5:45 pm the judges came out with the sentence: 11 years of imprisonment for Francesco Carta from Quartese and 9 years for his fellow citizen Nicola Loddo, respectively 33 and 24 years old.
The Court found them guilty of the attempted murder of a twenty-two-year-old outside a nightclub on the seafront. After the beating, the two allegedly continued to attack with a belt - in front of their respective girlfriends - even when the boy was unconscious on the ground. The victim ended up in intensive care at Brotzu, intubated and in an induced coma.
According to the reconstruction of the investigators, led by the prosecutor Rita Cariello, the 22-year-old - for very trivial reasons - had first been pushed, then hit and made to fall to the ground, on the sidewalk. Having hit his head on the concrete, he remained helpless, in a supine position, with a head trauma that had immediately made him lose consciousness.
Already in a coma, he would have received at least two violent kicks to the head and, after having removed his belt from his pants, he would have been hit with the buckle, ending up in intensive care. The beaten boy and his family had constituted themselves as civil party with the lawyer Maurizo Scarparo.
The two defendants were defended by the lawyers Mauro Massa and Alessandro Sassu.
This morning there was the closing speech with the PM Cariello replaced in the courtroom by her colleague Mario Leo, who had asked for 12 and a half years and 9 years in prison for the defendants.
After a long deliberation, the panel, chaired by Lucia Perra, came out with the sentence, accepting almost entirely the requests of the prosecution. The reasons are expected within 90 days, then the defense will appeal.
