The new candelabra of the Carpenters' Guild was presented this evening in Sassari, in the courtyard of the Palazzo Ducale. During the Faradda on August 14, 2024, at 10:54 PM, the candle broke near Corso Vico, causing dismay among those present and great emotion among the Guild members. However, there was also great solidarity for the Carpenters, who, with the support of the institutions, worked to create another candelabra from scratch. A dream come true with the contribution of several stakeholders, from the Municipality to the Fondazione di Sardegna to the Rotary Club and the Intergremio.
"The Candlestick," states Salvatore Bussu, the work's creator, "is made up of three parts, weighs over 150 kg, and bears the marks of the Craft and the coat of arms of the city of Sassari."
Mounted on a quadrangular base measuring 70 cm on each side, the candle extends onto a shaft 1 m 20 higher than the old model, consisting of a beam with seven rings to which 33 staves are attached. One of the new features is the paintings on the capital, all created by the artist Jacopo Scassellati. As in the past, they depict Saint Joseph, the patron saint of the Guild, in the front, with the Holy Family behind, but this time, for the first time, the other two sides feature depictions of two angels holding a flower.
"We asked for it," says Francesco Carta, secretary of the Carpenters, "as a reference to the Confraternity of Angels to which we once belonged."
Salvatore Sanna, Father Guardian of Santa Maria di Betlem, blessed the candlestick, then recalling that "everything is renewed and returns to its integrity."
At the end, the candle was inaugurated and made to "dance" in anticipation of the most eagerly awaited "baptism", that of the Festha Manna on August 14th.
