It was a scam. This was stated by the Court of Appeal of Sassari, which confirmed the first-instance sentence against a 51-year-old from Sassari accused of having “subtracted” over 100,000 km from the odometer of a car sold in 2017. The year in which the victim responded to an ad on subito.it regarding a Volkswagen Passat, attracted by the quality-price ratio.

The man shows up at the car dealership and is shown the car with 98,000 km of mileage and pays 10,500 euros, convinced that he has made a good deal. But after some time the air conditioning system breaks and the new owner receives information about the dealership that puts a flea in his ear.

Checking the car's history he discovers the anomaly of the inspections done on the Volkswagen, two in a few months, with the first reporting 118 thousand km more . This is confirmed to him by the first owner of the Passat who had sold it to a car dealership that had then given it for 6 thousand euros to the dealership managed by the defendant. Among other things, it was discovered that between the coupon of the previous inspection, which recorded over 216 thousand km, and the last one there was a perfect overlap so as to exclude that the original mileage could be read with the naked eye. After the investigations and the trial, the 51-year-old is sentenced in the first instance to 8 months and a 400 euro fine and decides to appeal with the lawyer Pierluigi Olivieri, arguing among other things that, despite being the director of the companies involved, he was not aware of the fraud in his opinion to be attributed to another person who worked in sales. But the Court of Appeal, presided over by Salvatore Marinaro, with Carmela Rita Serra and Giovanni Delogu as co-chairs, also renews the sentence and condemns the defendant to the same penalty plus the reimbursement of costs towards the civil party, assisted by the lawyer Carlo Ermini.
