Residents: "Forests on fire, sky obscured by smoke. I've never seen anything like it."

Emergency between Arzana and Elini , where a large fire broke out in a wooded area a short distance from State Road 389 and threatened a residential area, forcing the evacuation of around a hundred people.

"I've never seen anything like it," said some residents , who joined firefighting teams in an attempt to lend a hand. Some even watered the fields in an effort to limit possible damage.

The first alarm came in the afternoon: "I returned from work around three and when I passed by the road coming down from Arzana I noticed the smoke, which had reached the entire sky, and I immediately understood the gravity of the situation," said another woman who lives in the area.

Several aircraft, light helicopters, SuperPumas and even Canadairs then arrived on site to put out the flames.
