The island of Asinara is becoming increasingly inclusive and accessible, allowing people with disabilities to enjoy its beauty. This is demonstrated by the "Nature Without Barriers" event, which, for the eighth consecutive year, returns to the National Park on Sunday, June 14th.
An initiative born from the sensitivity of local associations and those from other parts of Sardinia , 230 people, including volunteers and disabled people, are participating in the initiative dedicated to shared hiking and the accessibility of nature trails. The initiative is organized, under the patronage of the Municipality of Porto Torres, by Atena Trekking in collaboration with the Turritana Volunteer Council as part of a broader national project promoted by the Federtrek - Hiking and Environment Social Promotion Agency, with the aim of making nature accessible to all, without distinction.
The event is made possible thanks to the collaboration of the Asinara National Park Authority, the Delcomar Navigation Company, the Avis 112 operators, the Sinuaria and Sealand Park operators, Azen Kayak, the I Sette Mari diving school, Cormorano Marina, and the many volunteers who will help ensure that all non-self-sufficient participants can discover and experience the environmental riches and unique features of the Island Park.
The details of "Nature Without Barriers" were presented this morning in the Sala Vassallo of the Palazzo del Marchese, in the presence of Mayor Massimo Mulas, Romano Chessa, President of the Atena Trekking association, and Adonella Mellino, President of the Volunteer Council. Also attending the meeting were Vittorio Gazale, Director of the Asinara National Park, Walter Chiarabaglio, President of the Porto Torres Avis association, Gianluca Utzeri, Captain of the Sara D ferry, and Cristina Bonino of the I Sette Mari diving center. The "Nature Without Barriers" group will set sail from Porto Torres at 8:30 a.m. to Cala Reale, the base for the initiative's activities. After disembarking, participants will be greeted by volunteers from participating associations who will accompany them along the National Park's trails, including those designed for people with disabilities, such as the blind trail and the path leading to the Ossuary beach, which is also accessible to wheelchair users with the assistance of a companion.
Various inclusive activities will be organized throughout the day, including visits to the CRAMA (Asinara Marine Animal Recovery Center) and the CEAS.inara, an educational experience at the Centro del Mare Museum, and hands-on snorkeling sessions led by instructors from the "I Sette Mari" diving school . It will also be possible to try kayaking activities thanks to the participation of Azen Kayak, with programs adapted to the needs of people with disabilities. The initiative was conceived not only as an opportunity to experience a day in nature but also as a moment of reflection on the importance of inclusion and overcoming the physical and cultural barriers that still limit many people's participation in the outdoors. 230 people have already signed up for the day, including participants (80 of whom have disabilities), companions, and volunteers.
The guests visiting the island are primarily from the Filippide Project, the Biccheddu Rest Home in Porto Torres, the associations Il Risveglio, Il mio amico speciale, PASSI in Sassari, Il sorriso in Ittiri, and Villa Rosa in Codrongianos, as well as individuals not directly affiliated with any association. Participation is free exclusively for people with disabilities and their companions, who will be exempt from paying the ferry and landing fees. Asinara National Park operators will collaborate on all activities, and medical assistance will be provided with an ambulance, assistants, and Avis nursing and medical staff.
