The prefectural ordinance establishing "red zones" with enhanced surveillance in the most sensitive areas of Cagliari has been extended until September 30, 2026.
The decision was made during a meeting of the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Safety , chaired by Prefect Paola Dessì , in the presence of Mayor Massimo Zedda and the heads of the police force.
"During the meeting," a statement from the Prefecture explains, "it emerged that the measure, part of a broader strategy aimed at ensuring the free and safe use of public spaces, has produced very positive results for public order and safety, in terms of a reduction in the number of crimes reported and committed , even in the areas surrounding those affected, and an increase in the level of safety perceived by citizens."
Prefect Dessì underlined that the measure "aims to protect the livability and usability of urban areas, also in light of the intensification of social life and the arrival of a growing number of tourists during the summer period , also characterised by a greater intensity of the phenomenon of nightlife and a consequent greater presence of people using public areas".
Mayor Zedda instead highlighted "the effectiveness of the measure in terms of actual and perceived safety in the community, confirming the marked decline in crime in the area affected by the checks." Zedda also emphasized that the measure "is part of a process already underway aimed at restoring community trust and livability in some of the city's busiest areas."
The extension of the ordinance, concludes the Prefecture's statement, "responds to the need to achieve a real and lasting deterrent effect on potential criminal activity in the most sensitive areas, consolidating the favorable results achieved, in order to ensure the full and peaceful use of public spaces by citizens, especially in view of the approaching summer season."
