Portovesme, it's ministers' day: workers' picket starts
Early stop to production of the zinc line, the unions: «No to political catwalks, we expect concrete actions»Video di Egidiangela Sechi
The workers of Portovesme srl began their picket this morning at the gates of the plant of the multinational controlled by Glencore after the company, last December 20, announced the early stop of production of the zinc line.
The sit-in was called by the unions on the day the Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso, the Minister of Labor Marina Calderone, the Undersecretary of Mimit Fausta Bergamotto, the President of the Sardinia Region Alessandra Todde, the Councilor for Industry Emanuele Cani and the President of the Regional Council Piero Comandini arrived.
"We are here to best demonstrate the level of attention and tension we are experiencing and to convey in an equally clear manner that we are not willing to lend ourselves to political catwalks, but that we expect concrete actions ", says the RSU of Portovesme Srl.
An appeal reiterated also by Don Antonio Mura, parish priest of Portoscuso and head of the pastoral care of work for the diocese of Iglesias : «Hypotheses for a distant future are not enough for us, we need projects for workers and families».
While waiting for the feasibility study for the project to recover black mass from batteries, Mimit is exploring the possibility that another industrial entity could take over the zinc production, defined by many as strategic. However, the spectre of redundancy payments for the approximately 875 direct workers remains, as well as possible layoffs for the employees of the contracting firms.
