The municipality of Porto Torres declares war on smoking on the beaches . From today until October 31, it will be forbidden to smoke on all the beaches in the area as well as to throw waste produced by smoking into the sea and on the beaches. Mayor Massimo Mulas ordered it in an order signed just this morning.

The measure was adopted for several reasons: the protection of public health, with the fight against smoking, the prevention of diseases affecting active and passive smokers, avoiding degradation and environmental damage caused by the bad habit of throwing cigarette butts in the sand and in the beaches in general.

Furthermore, the waste deriving from cigarette smoke is non-biodegradable material and contains a large amount of harmful components for the environment such as nicotine, polonium 210, toxic volatile compounds, tar, polycyclic hydrocarbons, cellulose acetate and other harmful elements.

Violation of this ordinance is punished with administrative sanctions ranging from 25 to 500 euros .

"With this provision we also apply to Porto Torres rules adopted in many municipalities - explains the mayor Massimo Mulas -. It is a pity that an ordinance is necessary to obtain respectful behavior towards others and the environment, but we are sure that in this way it will be It is possible to make our beautiful beaches even more decorous and welcoming ".
