"There is no respect for the memory of those who are no longer here, an indecent spectacle that continues to offend the civic sense of a community and the dignity of the deceased. If the dead could speak, they would only ask for mercy." Harsh and bitter comments from citizens on the state of degradation that has been noted for some time in the Ponte Pizzinu cemetery, owned by the Municipality of Porto Torres.
Built to meet the need for space shortages in the Balai city cemetery, the complex is called the “new” cemetery, but today it presents an unfortunate image with unkempt grass framing the graves and damaged structures.
"We went there personally to carry out an inspection to verify the veracity of the dozens of reports we received and to personally verify what was complained about", denounces the Porto Torres Avanti council group, composed of councilors Bastianino Spanu and Costantino Ligas. "Unfortunately, it's all true: crumbling fences that risk collapsing on people who go to the cemetery every day to honor their loved ones, - declare the two exponents of the political force - unsafe electrical panels, temporarily fixed to the precarious wooden fences, non-existent sidewalks and abandoned flowerbeds: a state of total and unspeakable neglect". They underline the need for extraordinary maintenance work in the Ponte Pizzinu cemetery, but above all they ask for a change of pace in the composition of the executive. "The current one has failed", they say. "Mayor Massimo Mulas should carry out a serious review of his government team and do it immediately. We are no longer willing to accept councilors who are unfit to carry out the role assigned to them, because citizens deserve respect and to live in a clean and safe city, there must be no second-class deceased people".
