The former Sardinian ironworks, a threat even before the roof collapsed, today presents itself with a greater asbestos risk. Bad weather only gave way to a roof that time had turned into a dangerous ruin. That old factory, like so many others in the Porto Torres industrial area, carries environmental and public health risks .

The latest collapse of the former ironworks, located at the intersection of via Fratelli Vivaldi and via Marco Polo, has alarmed environmentalists and the doctors themselves who are asking for immediate intervention by Arpas , or the institutions responsible for making the area safe.

The mayor Massimo Mulas together with the deputy mayor Simona Fois, the secretary general, the local police, with the support of the technical offices of the Municipality, are closely following the issue of the collapse of the roof of the former ironworks. «The ordinance can be adopted only if a third party certifies a situation of concrete and imminent danger – claims the municipal administration -, therefore without this motivation the provision would be illegitimate and ineffective. The Municipality has no powers in this regard, therefore it remains operational and ready to adopt any ordinances following field investigations ».

The president of the environmental association Tuteliamo il Golfo dell'Asinara, Giuseppe Alesso, underlines that he had only recently reported the seriousness of the situation to the Public Health Institute, highlighting the danger of dispersion of asbestos fibers when the old structures they crumble.
