The scene is impressive: hundreds of velelle beached in Porto Palmas. The “barchette di San Pietro”, as they are called, are a planktonic species related to the jellyfish that have invaded several parts of Sardinia.
"Unfortunately, as soon as the bathers see them - says Enrico Sini, an entrepreneur who deals with launching and hauling boats - they go away, leaving this beautiful stretch deserted."
In fact, it is impossible to put a towel where the velelle are, which also bring with them a myriad of flies. "Yes, it is full," continues Sini, "not to mention the rancid smell they give off."
The result of their decomposition that causes a miasma similar to urine that certainly does not favor the arrival of families. "Unfortunately, no one is coming to the beach because of the velelle. The last few days have been splendid but not a single tourist or bather has been seen."
A significant economic damage for those who have businesses in the area, in addition to the fact that a fascinating stretch of sea in northern Sardinia is avoided, impoverishing the territory.
