Sardinia's youngest and most recently established municipality, the Municipality of Padru, turns thirty today. Celebrating the Gallura town's independence this morning were its incumbent mayor, Antonello Idini, and its first mayor, Antonio Satta, who led it for twenty years. Officially established on January 3, 1996, with Regional Law No. 1, the municipality of Padru achieved independence after years of protests and a popular referendum promoted by a large citizenry that sanctioned its separation from Buddusò. "I am proud to be mayor of Padru at this significant moment in history," said Idini, acknowledging his predecessor's full contribution to the town's history. Today's meeting kicks off both institutional and cultural ceremonies: the aim is to highlight the thirty-year journey and the municipality's historic events, from Holocaust Remembrance Day to a special edition of the International Painting Biennial.
