Antonio Maria Pani, the 64-year-old who last night in Ozieri, in the Sassari area , saturated his apartment with gas and then called 112 saying: "I killed my wife" , could have carried out a massacre of carabinieri .

A trap, perhaps but it is still to be verified , that he had prepared against the forces of law and order: the man seems to hate the police and the Carabinieri because he considers them responsible for the separation from his wife, who years ago had reported him for mistreatment. And just a few days ago he had been sentenced by the Court of Sassari because he was considered responsible for the damage to the commemorative plaque of the Carabiniere Walter Frau, killed in Chilivani in 1995 in a firefight with a gang of robbers who were preparing to attack an armored van.

Inside the house in a building on Via Meridda, in the Tramentu neighborhood, there was a remote-controlled trigger. Pani, waiting for the carabinieri to arrive, hid in an underground bunker he had dug himself in the courtyard, ready to blow up the apartment with a remote control . It is not clear what made him desist at the last moment.

After the firefighters broke down the front door of the house where they feared they would find Pani's wife murdered, turned off the gas and found that there was no one in the apartment, the men of the Arma immediately understood that it was a trap . They thus tracked down the woman, who lives in another municipality, by telephone and verified that she was okay. After about an hour of general alarm, with the residents of the neighborhood locked in their homes because it was feared that Pani was armed, the soldiers of the Ozieri Company, led by Major Gabriele Tronca, found the man hiding in his underground bunker and arrested him without him putting up any resistance.

By order of the prosecutor, the 64-year-old was then transferred to the Bancali prison: he is charged with attempted massacre, simulation of a crime and threatening a public official. However, the validation will not take place today .
