Olbia, elderly woman dies in gas-filled kitchen explosion: all acquitted after 11 years

All acquitted in the disaster on Via Brunelleschi in Olbia. On the morning of April 1, 2015 , Michelina Ena's home was gutted by a violent explosion caused by a gas leak. The 84-year-old pensioner was in the kitchen and was hit by a wall . The elderly woman died in Sassari after being admitted to the burns unit.
Today, after 11 years of investigations and hearings, Tempio Pausania Court Judge Federica Lunari acquitted Paolo Guglielmi, legal representative of Sarda Reti Gas, owner of the gas supply service (urban network) in Olbia; Maria Teresa Dettori, of Sassari, legal representative of DMT, the company that installed the victim's gas system; Gabriele Melino, a DTM technician from Olbia, responsible for verifying the system's integrity at the house on Via Brunelleschi; and Fortunato Cangemi, a Sicilian, for whom, unlike the other defendants, a conviction was not requested.
The defense has refuted the prosecution's case ; according to the prosecutor, the explosion was also caused by alleged anomalies in the home's LPG system. The defense attorneys are Jacopo Merlini, Agostinangelo Marras, Sara Dettori, Carlo Selis, Stefano Deiana, Giovanni Azzena, and Cesare Placanica. Merlini stated: "We are extremely satisfied with the outcome of this complex and tragic legal case." The plaintiff's lawyer, Antonello Desini, commented: "We are waiting to read the reasons for the case; once they are resolved, we will evaluate a possible appeal ."
