Everyone was waiting for the bang, the "package" arrived: no one showed up to detonate the bomb (or presumed bomb) found in the sea at a depth of one and a half metres, in front of the beach of Cala Cipolla, in the territory of Domus de Mary .
The body of water in this small paradise in the south-west of Sardinia has been closed to bathing and navigation since last Friday, when the Captain's Office issued a warning of the discovery of a weapon of war after a report from a swimmer. The communication was sent to the Municipality. And the mayor Concetta Spada signed an ordinance: the risk area cannot be approached even on foot, the road leading to the Capo Spartivento lighthouse is also closed. On the first day all the attendees were evicted.
The area has been fenced off and signs have been placed. Except that there were those who continued to enter the beach to swim: it was necessary to deploy local police officers to guard the gates and prevent anyone from putting themselves in danger.
A sacrifice, for an administration with reduced staff like that of Domus de Maria. And it had been taken into account that today everything would end, because that was what had been communicated.
«We were in Cala Cipolla this morning, as agreed», explains Spada, «but no one came for the blasting. And if we hadn't called, left and right, we would still be waiting there." The date for the blasting had been communicated "by short notice", as they say when there are no official communications. It was not respected.
The Navy's SDAI, i.e. the bomb squad, should intervene: they should also say whether it is a bomb from the Second World War or some weapon that escaped control during military exercises.
" Only in the evening were we able to speak to the right office," underlines the first citizen. Certain answers? No: "We were told that they don't know when they will be able to intervene." Meanwhile, Cala Cipolla remains a closed area. Like the Capo Teulada range not far away, where shooting will start again from next October 1st.
