Another human case of Nile Fever in the Oristano area is the second of 2023. A 51-year-old man from Siamaggiore , who is hospitalized in the medical department of San Martino in Oristano, contracted the virus.

The patient, explains the director of the Hygiene and Public Health Service of ASL 5 Valentina Marras, «arrived at the hospital with the symptoms of encephalitis , the tests ascertained that it was the Nile Fever virus. The man has no other pathologies, he is now better and the situation is under control ."

In August , a 72-year-old from Siamanna tested positive and is still hospitalized in Sassari in the infectious diseases department. Last year there were eight human cases in the Oristano area, four of whom died.

In the meantime, the ASL has sent the Municipality of Siamaggiore a proposal for a union ordinance to immediately implement all prevention and control measures and avoid further spread of the virus.

Dr. Marras reminds citizens of the precautions to be implemented to avoid contagion of the virus: «It is important that the elderly and frail people in particular protect themselves by adopting a series of precautions. First of all, it is necessary to avoid stagnant water, where mosquito larvae proliferate. For this reason it is necessary to frequently empty flower saucers, buckets, tires and barrels; change the water in pet bowls often; keep paddling pools empty or cover them when not in use ; treat manholes and rainwater drainage wells, drainage and stagnation areas with larvicidal products; check that the gutters are clean and not blocked; cover the cisterns and containers where rainwater collects with airtight lids, sheets or mosquito nets. To protect yourself from bites, it is then recommended to shield doors and windows with mosquito nets, use skin repellents to ward off insects , avoid staying in areas where there are artificial lakes and stagnant water, such as gardens and parks, particularly at dusk and at night, when mosquitoes are more active."
