Again, we're starting tomorrow. The opening of the surface metro—which, however, would be more correctly called a tram—was initially planned for fall 2024, then at the end of the Christmas holidays, and then after the Easter holidays. The new date is in July: the start of the new school year. But even this won't be met, and given the numerous construction sites, the consequences will be dramatic for Cagliari's motorists.
At the stake
Cost increases, the pandemic, and various setbacks. It seems like a curse is hanging over Metro Line 3. The final hurdle is the testing by Ansfisa (the national agency responsible for safety in the railway, road, and highway infrastructure sector, which operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport). Beginning on Tuesday, July 29, they resumed this week after the August break, but there is no word on when they will be completed.
Regional Transport Councilor Barbara Manca explains. "In the coming days, further inspections will be carried out on the infrastructure to initiate the so-called pre-operation phase, which involves the continuous circulation of vehicles without passengers for a certain number of days," Councilor Manca explains. "At the end of this phase, if everything goes well and is certified by the commission's report, we are ready to issue the operating permit." The timing? "The opening date is out of our control, but we are confident it will be imminent."
