On the occasion of the "Day of Remembrance", which occurs tomorrow, the prefect of Oristano Fabrizio Stelo presented Antonietta Murtas, 101, with the Medal of Honor. The old woman, who lives in Nuraxinieddu, was deported and interned in Linz from 8 September 1943 to 1 October 1944.

"Only me and those up there know the pain and suffering I felt," said the woman, born in Santu Lussurgiu in 1920.

"It was September 8, 1943 - she said -, I was in Rome to look after my sister's children, I was taken and taken away. I was saved by a miracle" and, in tears, she added: "I'm tired of remembering this sad story, which I still keep today with pain in my heart ".

The Prefect was accompanied by the mayor of Oristano, Andrea Lutzu, and wanted to underline "the importance of keeping alive the memory of that tragic period in the history of our country, which saw the persecution of many Italians who suffered deportation, imprisonment, death ". "The sacrifice of so many innocent people cannot remain in vain - concluded Stelo -. A dramatic past that cannot and must not be forgotten and that we must all remember together so that it never happens again".
