Sixty-two Sardinian mayors were elected before the polls closed. In all municipalities with fewer than 15,000 inhabitants where only one list had been submitted, the 40% quorum was reached, thus avoiding the need for a special commissioner. The official confirmation will only come this afternoon with the count, as 50% of the votes cast must be valid.
The rules applied this year stem from Legislative Decree No. 196 of December 27, 2025. The law extended an exemption for municipalities with up to 15,000 inhabitants where only one list is present: the election is valid if at least 40% of eligible voters vote and the list receives at least 50% of the valid votes cast. If these thresholds are not met, the election is void and the municipality is placed under special administration.
