Large fire in a company that disposes of waste in Sassari, helicopters in action

A large black cloud rose in the early afternoon of today from the Gesam area, in Truncu Reale, on the outskirts of Sassari : a fire developed inside the waste disposal plant and the flames spread quickly.

Great concern among the inhabitants of the area: “The air is unbreathable”, explains our reader Andrea Panu.

Firefighters, local police, civil protection and forestry corps were on site with the support of two helicopters, a Canadair and a Superpuma.

The mayor Nanni Campus also reached the area together with the commander of the local police, Gianni Serra, to coordinate the Civil Protection machine.

“From an environmental point of view - explained Antonello Sassu, municipal councilor for the Environment - the situation is worrying, tons of plastic were crammed into the structure, and then also paper and aluminum. The whole municipal machine is committed to facing the emergency ". Meanwhile, the mayor of nearby Sennori, Nicola Sassu, has raised the alarm to his community on social networks, inviting citizens to keep their windows closed and avoid outdoor activities. As did the mayor of Sorso, Fabrizio Demelas.

In the evening, the senior executives of the fire brigade command, the Noe carabinieri, and the Forestry Corps arrived with the ARPAS technicians to evaluate the actions to be taken with respect to the dioxin risk, which is being released into the air.

However, Mayor Campus has signed an ordinance in which he orders citizens to "limit outdoor activities, with particular regard to those of a recreational and sporting nature" and to "keep the windows closed in case of persistent and foul-smelling smoke". The provisions are valid "pending the drafting of the fallout model of airborne pollutants, and in any case for a period not exceeding 24 hours, by virtue of the precautionary principle, for residents in the localities of Bancali, Ottava, San Giovanni, Li points and Sassari city, for a radius of about 6 kilometers from the place of the fire and limited to the territory of Sassari ”.
