A two-year battle, born from the bottom and grown in classrooms, self-managed help desks and student assemblies. Now it is law. The Regional Council of Sardinia has approved an amendment that allocates 1,800,000 euros over three years to strengthen the psychological counseling service at the Universities of Cagliari and Sassari. A historic result, which bears the signature and energy of UniCaralis, Udu Sassari and the network of the Unione degli Universitari, tireless protagonists of a mobilization that has put the mental health of male and female students at the center.
It all started in 2023, when student representatives from the University of Cagliari and Sassari presented a regional bill to guarantee everyone access to continuous, structured and free psychological support . A political and civil act, born from listening to people and fueled by the awareness that mental suffering can no longer be a taboo.
Today that proposal has become reality. Thanks to the amendment just approved, the two main Sardinian universities will finally have the means to strengthen the counseling service, with more professionals available and simplified access paths. "It is a victory for everyone - declare UniCaralis and Udu Sassari -. This achievement is the result of collective work, made of meetings, discussions and determination. We have never given up on the idea that mental health could be a privilege".
The funding, equal to 600 thousand euros per year for the next three years, will allow to expand the psychological teams, increase individual paths and propose prevention and emotional well-being activities. "What we have achieved in Sardinia must become a model to be extended at a national level. We will continue to fight so that no one feels alone anymore, so that every university becomes a safe place also for the mind".
