The municipal council of Oristano is involved in protecting public health in the area. A motion was approved unanimously (22 votes in favour) which commits the Mayor and the Council to continue with actions and interventions towards the Region and those who govern healthcare to support the needs of the territory starting from continuity of care and general medicine and by a reorganization and innovation of social-welfare and social-health services.

The motion was signed by the councilors of the center-left minority Della Volpe, Sanna, Marchi, Marcoli, Obinu, Daga, Obinu and Federico. In short, among the requests, solutions for the recruitment of staff , the strengthening of Ascot , the voluntary reinstatement of retired doctors , the strengthening of medical guards and hospital departments and the activation of an inter-institutional roundtable for employment extraordinary in the civil service of doctors of the armed forces .

Among the critical issues highlighted in the document are the difficult situation of the San Martino hospital , afflicted by a shortage of personnel which causes a situation of constant strain , the insufficient number of general practitioners and paediatricians in the provincial territory , the emergency medical service which continues to function in fits and starts , the Ascots which open a few days a week , the long waiting times and the suspension of many services , some also linked to serious pathologies, the continuity of care reduced to a minimum which risks not ensuring the provision of the levels essential assistance.

Another sore point is the use of rented doctors , without which, however, the councilors who signed the motion point out, "we would have closed public healthcare". And then the limitation on access to medical courses , a solution defined as "a total failure", and the "Single booking center which transformed Sardinia into a single large hospital".

Mayor Massimiliano Sanna intervened underlining the importance of a motion that allows us to keep the attention of institutions and public opinion high on a fundamental issue such as healthcare : «Unfortunately more than once I have felt helpless because as administrators municipal authorities we have no tools available ", his words. «But let no one have any doubts: the institutions, ours first and foremost, and public opinion have their spotlight constantly focused on healthcare issues. To define an effective strategy, however, you need to know your interlocutors and at the moment the main one is missing: the Region. As soon as he takes office, we will immediately ask the health councilor for a meeting."

Mayor Sanna recalled that the continuous action of the Municipality, the Health District and the social partners has resulted in countless documents, meetings, demonstrations : «I limit myself to recalling the discussions with Councilor Doria and with the general director Serusi , demonstrations for the defense of healthcare and citizens' rights. But I also want to highlight the commitment of the general director of the ASL whose action we cannot underestimate and also the results obtained in a context of objective difficulty, which is common to every situation in Italy. The lack of doctors, due to macroscopic programming errors dating back decades, is at the root of the current crisis. However, the birth of the Ascot, the opening of new departments in the hospital (such as neurology or neurorehabilitation), the launch of new services (such as the very recent one on eating disorders) and new machines (the CT scan) demonstrate how the current management is trying to find solutions to critical issues. Having said this, we cannot ignore the innumerable difficulties which, no later than two months ago, led us, together with the presidents of the health districts of Ghilarza-Bosa, Ales-Terralba and Oristano, to deliver a document to the Prefect Salvatore Angieri to denounce the serious conditions affecting healthcare in the area. The document takes note of the continuing health crisis affecting the capital municipality and peripheral centres, hospital facilities and basic services".
