He lied during the trial and killed with the aggravating circumstance of cruelty. These are the reasons for the life sentence imposed by the judges of the Court of Assizes of Sassari against Davide Iannelli, found responsible for the murder of Antonio Cozzolino which took place in Olbia on 11 March 2022. The sentence was issued last November 5, now the reasons explain why the maximum penalty was given.

Two basic elements have been highlighted: the first is that Iannelli lied throughout the trial, the second is cruelty .

The forty-nine-year-old from Cardito (province of Naples) said that Cozzolino had attacked him with punches and other blows, but from the testimonies and videos the opposite emerged: that is, that he had been the one to attack the victim. In addition, he had thrown gasoline in his face, set him on fire and then walked away looking at him. A reconstruction, the one reported in the Court's order, which follows that of the prosecutor Claudia Manconi in her closing speech.

The Court of Assizes of Sassari accepted the thesis of the prosecution (magistrates Claudia Manconi and Gregorio Capasso), with the aggravating circumstance of cruelty, but excluded premeditation and torture.

The story dates back to almost three years ago: the two, neighbors, were on bad terms and Cozzolino had died after being doused in gasoline and engulfed in flames .
