Great pain and solidarity towards an unfortunate family. These are the widespread sentiments in the community of Ghilarza after the tragic death of the 83-year-old farmer Peppino Mele, hit by the bucket of the excavator used by his 54-year-old son Efisio, while the latter was arranging some large boulders to be used for the construction of a perimeter wall on one of their farms, on the provincial road that leads from Ghilarza to Fordongianus.

Today was not an easy day for the many relatives, friends and acquaintances. A family nucleus, that of the Apples, of people devoted to work in the countryside and who have never spared or given up even after having suffered so many adversities. The death of David , one of the victim's sons, who died following a serious illness, joined by the death, also premature, of Efisio's wife, who since yesterday must also mourn her father.

Until late at night in front of the accident site, the same son could not find peace for having been the involuntary cause of his father's tragic end . In the family home there is a continuous coming and going of people who want to show solidarity and affection for his wife Anna and their other three sons Luca, Stefano and Mauro .

The parish priest, Father Paolo Contini, also arrived. «I wanted to bring closeness and affection to a family that has been carrying the weight of an important pain on their shoulders for some time. We will pray for them throughout Holy Week."

Peppino Mele was a country man who looked after his work, but always attentive to the problems of the agricultural and pastoral world. With this in mind, in 1995, he also made himself available for a candidacy in the municipal elections on the "Work and Solidarity" list led by Gianfranco Pinna.
