Federica Govoni is the new director of the Inaf-Astronomical Observatory of Cagliari .
For astrophysics , already in force in the institute and which takes over from Emilio Molinari, who has reached the natural expiry of the mandate, a renewable three-year mandate .
The appointment , which has already been effective since 1 August, comes at a very important historical moment for the INAF of Cagliari in which, after a long phase of technological renewal, the Sardinia Radio Telescope is preparing to return fully operational to observe the sky with instruments of world excellence.
Federica Govoni carries out scientific research in the field of the study of relativistic particles and the magnetic field present in large-scale structures of the Universe such as galaxies, clusters
of galaxies and cosmological filaments. Since 2017, he has held the position of head of the UTG-II National Enabling Division for Radio Astronomy, of the Scientific Direction of INAF. In this role she was involved in the scientific and technological coordination of the Institute's radio astronomy at national and international level. She was also coordinator of the PON project, funded by the Ministry of University and Research with 18.7 million euros, aimed at strengthening the Sardinia Radio Telescope for the study of the Universe at high radio frequencies. Precisely thanks to the four-year work on the PON project, the Sardinia Radio Telescope has been equipped with instrumentation that brings it to its maximum observational potential, from 0.3 to 116 GigaHertz (in 2018 it could only observe up to 26 GHz).
«I have the privilege of being part of the INAF-Cagliari Astronomical Observatory since 2005 - the words of Federica Govoni - In all these years I have had the opportunity to appreciate the spirit of union of the staff, the friendliness of the work environment and the potential of growth of the Observatory . In fact, we are a structure made up of young and motivated personnel with a wide variety of scientific and technological interests.
We also have the honor of managing the Sardinia Radio Telescope, one of the most innovative and performing radio telescopes in Europe and, due to the latest technological updates, in the world».
«Managing an observatory like the one in Cagliari - continues Govoni - is both complex and stimulating, for which I thank Emilio Molinari for having worked until the last day of his mandate to leave a stable and orderly situation on which to build with relative tranquility the scientific future of the structure».
