Law passed, director general lost. Less than 24 hours after the Regional Council approved the new law "Regulation of the Regional Civil Protection System" on Tuesday, the following day, Wednesday, the agency's director general, Mauro Merella, resigned.

The decision was communicated in a lengthy letter to Environment Councilor Rosanna Laconi, who heads the Civil Protection Department, and to her Human Resources colleague Sebastian Cocco, whose offices must acknowledge the soon-to-be vacant position. Merella assures them that he intends to ensure administrative continuity until July 8th, to prevent the entire system from descending into chaos on the eve of the hottest summer months. But he writes, in short: things can't go on like this.

The main reason? The newly passed law itself: it didn't satisfy him. He wanted his own team of managers, to be hired on a contract basis. But there are rankings to draw from. The law didn't accept his request, and he decided to pack his bags. And leave his position.
